Tonight I watched Elf, decorated a Christmas tree, hung up decorations, and drank hot chocolate. It was almost as if I was a real live American celebrating Christmas in the good 'ole US of A.
But for the most part, Christmas in Beijing is silly.
Outside my work is a tall blue Christmas tree surrounded by mushrooms and neighbored by a large palace. I've also seen Christmas lights in the shape of, wait for it...palm trees. Nice try, China. At the western food market, Jenny Lou's (of course it would be called that), they have every flavor of candy cane (including candy canes with Mickey Mouse on them), except the regular peppermint. Whyyyyy? At work we are having a Christmas party for the kids, and naturally mine and Kelly's role in the play are monsters. I'm sorry, does anyone remember a monster in the Christmas story?
Nothing wrong with a makeshift Christmas!
And thanks to y'all who sent presents and cards :) I know Christmas is not about getting gifts, but it has made the holiday seem a little more like home :)
Shen dan kuai le!
